・Variations of “Noh” & forms of the performances
OKINATSUKIGOBANDATE has become the official performance since the Edo era, from the days of the Tokunaga regime, and have generally been classified into the groups below.

(脇能物・神能)

ICHIBANMEMONO
(WAKINOHMONO/JINNOH)

Mainly the dramas in this category depicts wishes of peace in the society and for the happiness of the people, or it narrates the performance of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples by using God as a SHITE. It is not very dramatic, but the dances and music are variegated.

(修羅能)

NIBANMEMONO
(SHURANOH)

The dramas in this category shows and depicts the scene of carnage that people suffer from after death often using the spirit (soul) of military commander Genpei as the SHITE. It is a category ZEAMI established. Often shows and depicts the beauty of “wreckage of the defeated ones”.

(鬘物・女物)

SANBANMEMONO (KAZURAMONO/ONNAMONO)
Dramas in this category are recollection of a love story mostly using characters from literature of the dynasty like “the tale of Genji” and “the tale of Ise”, using the graceful and elegant soul of a woman as a SHITE. It is the typical category in Noh, does not use exaggerated expressions, and takes us into a world of beauty because it shows us the pursuit of subtleness and profoundness of beauty in Noh.

YOBANMEMONO
(ZATSUNOH)
Various types of dramas belong in this category like crazy and frantic types of Noh, ardor Noh, Chinese (Tang) Noh and many more. Many popular songs are in this category too.

GOBANMEMONO
(KIRINOH/KINOH)
Performed in dynamic dances and action so it is easy for beginners to watch, and mainly uses inhumane characteristics like demons, a long-nosed goblin, the God of the dragon for the SHITE.
